Rwanda Expels Belgian Diplomats Amid DRC Conflict

Rwanda-Belgium Diplomatic Relations Severed Over DRC Issues

Rwanda has severed diplomatic relations with Belgium, ordering all Belgian diplomats to depart within 48 hours. This decision stems from escalating tensions over the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where Belgium has accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebel group, a claim Rwanda denies.

The European Union has imposed sanctions on Rwandan military commanders and M23 members, further straining relations. In response, Belgium declared Rwandan diplomats persona non grata and suspended governmental cooperation and aid.

These diplomatic rifts coincide with the M23 rebels withdrawing from planned peace talks in Angola, citing international sanctions and ongoing military offensives by the DRC government.
