Explosion Disrupts Trans-Niger Pipeline in Rivers

Trans-Niger Pipeline Explosion: Latest Updates from Rivers

An explosion occurred on Monday night along the Trans-Niger Pipeline near Bodo, a community in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State. The blast ignited a fire on the affected section of this critical export pipeline, which transports crude oil to the Bonny Terminal.

The exact cause of the explosion remains unknown. Authorities are investigating whether it resulted from human interference, especially considering recent threats by militant groups to attack oil installations in response to the Federal Government’s withholding of Rivers State’s allocation amid an ongoing political crisis.

Bodo, inhabited predominantly by the Ogoni people, has previously experienced significant environmental damage due to oil spills. Notably, in 2008 and 2009, massive spills from the Trans-Niger Pipeline devastated local waterways, destroying livelihoods dependent on fishing and farming.
