
High-Profile Sea Pirates Arrested in Niger Delta Operations
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has achieved a significant breakthrough in combating criminal activities in the Niger Delta region by arresting 17 high-profile sea pirates. These individuals are implicated in the murder of an NSCDC officer and attacks on oil and gas facilities.
Details of the Arrest:
- Operation: The arrests were executed on March 6, 2025, during a coordinated intelligence-driven operation at Tonogbene in Ekeremo Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The operation involved the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’s SIS) in collaboration with other security agencies.
- Suspects: Among the arrested is Ziakede Amatu, identified as the leader of the syndicate. Amatu, originally from Norgbene community in Ekeremo, has been linked to various criminal activities, including vandalism, kidnapping, and armed robbery, terrorizing Bayelsa and neighboring states.
Criminal Activities:
- Attack on Security Personnel: On January 21, 2025, the suspects allegedly attacked a Joint Task Force comprising NSCDC operatives and personnel from Tantita Security Services at their base in Torugbene II, Ekeremo LGA. This assault resulted in the death of Assistant Superintendent Umar Aliyu, the theft of his AK-47 rifle, injury to a Tantita Security operative, and the hijacking of a speedboat.
- Oil Facility Attacks: The group has been implicated in multiple attacks on oil and gas installations in the Niger Delta, disrupting operations and causing significant economic losses.
Recovered Items:
The operation led to the seizure of:
- One AK-47 rifle
- Two empty magazines
- Fifteen sets of Tantita Security uniforms
- Black boots
These items were allegedly used by the suspects to impersonate security personnel during their criminal activities.
Further Investigations:
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects attempted to infiltrate Tantita Security Services by procuring uniforms and launching attacks under the guise of legitimate security operations. Their aim was to discredit the efforts of Tantita Security and its chairman, Tompolo, especially after failing to secure surveillance contracts.
