Megan Rapinoe Criticizes Trump’s Trans Athlete Ban

Rapinoe Speaks Out Against Trump’s Sports Order

Former U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe has publicly criticized President Donald Trump’s recent executive order that effectively bans transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports at public institutions. She described the order as “cruel” and “depraved,” highlighting her disapproval of the policy.

This executive order, titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” threatens to withhold federal funding from schools that allow transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports. It also directs state attorneys general to develop policies barring transgender participation. In response, organizations like the NCAA have announced compliance with the order, indicating plans to ban transgender women and girls from women’s sports.

Rapinoe has been a consistent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and has previously expressed support for the inclusion of transgender athletes in sports. In a 2023 interview, she voiced her anger over the weaponization of women’s sports to discriminate against transgender individuals, emphasizing that those opposing transgender participation often lack genuine concern for women’s sports.

The debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports remains contentious. A United Nations report highlighted that, by March 2024, over 600 female athletes had lost nearly 900 medals to biological males in more than 400 competitions across various sports. The report suggests that existing policies by international sports federations have undermined fairness and safety for female athletes.

Rapinoe’s outspoken stance has drawn criticism from some public figures. British broadcaster Piers Morgan labeled her a “fraud” for her comments against President Trump’s order.
