State of Emergency in Rivers: Bode George’s Strong Critique
Former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. Describing the move as “absolute Armageddon” and a “total disrespect for constituted authority,” George questioned the necessity and legality of such an action.
Expressing his concerns, George stated: “We can’t keep quiet. This is recklessness of the highest order. What did Fubara do?” He further alleged that President Tinubu had empowered former Governor Nyesom Wike with military and security forces to destabilize Rivers State, despite the governor lacking control over these agencies.
Drawing parallels to past political crises in Nigeria, George warned that this action might be a precursor to future undemocratic practices, particularly concerning the 2027 elections. He accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to seize control of states through unconstitutional means.
George also questioned the procedural legitimacy of the declaration, asking whether President Tinubu had secured the necessary approval from the National Assembly before making his announcement. He concluded by expressing concerns about a potential drift towards dictatorship under Tinubu’s administration.
