Rivers State: Senate Declares State of Emergency
On March 20, 2025, the Nigerian Senate approved President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. This decision, also endorsed by the House of Representatives, grants the President authority to implement emergency measures in the state for an initial period of six months.
The emergency declaration led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the State House of Assembly. This action aims to address escalating political instability and recent incidents of pipeline vandalism that threaten national stability.
In response to the crisis, President Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the sole administrator of Rivers State during the emergency period.
The Senate has also called for the establishment of a mediation committee comprising eminent Nigerians to reconcile the conflicting parties within Rivers State during this period.
These developments underscore the federal government’s commitment to restoring stability and addressing security challenges in Rivers State.
