Tragic Abia Gas Explosion Claims 2 Lives, Injures 10
A gas explosion occurred at the Inner Galaxy Steel Company in Umuahala Obuzor, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to ten others. The incident took place around 9:00 am while customers were being attended to at the facility.
According to reports, the explosion was triggered when a gas cylinder slipped from a customer’s hand, hit the ground, and exploded. The injured victims have been transferred to a medical facility in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for treatment.
The chairman of Ukwa West Local Government Area, Pastor Dike Nwankwo, visited the scene to assess the situation and confirmed that all victims were customers present at the facility during the explosion. He emphasized the need for strict adherence to safety protocols by the company’s management to prevent future occurrences.
The Abia State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the incident. The spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, stated that the explosion occurred when a gas cylinder slipped from a customer’s hand and hit the ground before exploding.
