Yoon's Impeachment: South Korea's Court Set to Make Ruling

South Korea’s Court to Rule on President Yoon’s Impeachment

South Korea’s Constitutional Court is set to deliver its ruling on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol on Friday, April 4, 2025.

The impeachment proceedings stem from President Yoon’s declaration of martial law in December 2024, which lasted for six hours before being rescinded. This action led to significant political turmoil and public protests across the nation. In response, the National Assembly, with a liberal majority, voted to impeach Yoon, citing an overreach of presidential powers.

For the impeachment to result in Yoon’s removal from office, at least six of the eight Constitutional Court justices must vote in favor of dismissal. If upheld, a new presidential election will be required within 60 days. Conversely, if the court overturns the impeachment, Yoon will be reinstated immediately.

The impending ruling has heightened political tensions and deepened divisions within South Korea. Acting President Han Duck-soo has urged citizens to respect the court’s decision, expressing concern over the potential for increased violence regardless of the outcome.
