Abure’s Labour Party Chairmanship Rejected by Supreme Court
On April 4, 2025, the Supreme Court of Nigeria ruled to set aside the Court of Appeal’s judgment that had recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP). The apex court held that the appellate court lacked jurisdiction over the matter, emphasizing that disputes concerning a political party’s leadership are internal affairs beyond judicial intervention.
Following this decision, Julius Abure’s status as the LP’s National Chairman has been called into question. However, Obiora Ifoh, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, has stated that Abure remains the chairman. Ifoh argues that the Supreme Court’s judgment did not dismiss Abure but rather upheld the party’s internal processes for leadership selection, which courts should not interfere with.
This development has led to confusion within the party, with both Abure’s camp and that of Nenadi Usman, who has also claimed leadership, interpreting the Supreme Court’s judgment to their advantage. The conflicting interpretations have intensified the leadership crisis within the Labour Party, leaving its future direction uncertain.
