UK Lawmakers Detained and Deported by Israel
Two British Labour Party Members of Parliament (MPs), Yuan Yang and Abtisam Mohamed, were detained and deported by Israeli authorities upon their arrival at Ben Gurion International Airport. The MPs intended to visit the occupied West Bank as part of a humanitarian fact-finding delegation organized by the Council for Arab-British Understanding (CAABU) and Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP).
Israeli authorities justified the deportation by alleging that the MPs had previously supported the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which is prohibited under Israeli law for non-citizens and non-residents. The Israeli immigration ministry also accused them of intending to document security activities and disseminate anti-Israel sentiment.
In response, UK’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy criticized Israel’s actions as “unacceptable, counterproductive, and deeply concerning,” emphasizing that such treatment of British parliamentarians is inappropriate. Conversely, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch defended Israel’s right to control its borders, stating that every country has the authority to make such decisions.
