Bridging the National Metering Gap: 3.2M Meters Incoming
The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to receive the first batch of 3,205,101 electricity meters aimed at addressing the nation’s metering shortfall. According to Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the Minister of Power, the initial delivery of 75,000 meters under the International Competitive Bid 1 (ICB1) is expected in April 2025, with an additional 200,000 meters scheduled for May 2025.
This initiative is part of the Distribution Sector Recovery Program (DISREP), which plans to deliver over 3.2 million meters by 2026 through various procurement models, including International Competitive Bids and National Competitive Bids. The government’s efforts aim to significantly reduce the metering gap and enhance transparency in electricity billing.
In June 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved N21 billion for 11 electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to procure and install meters for customers at no cost. This funding is part of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) scheme, designed to accelerate meter deployment nationwide.
As of December 2024, approximately 5.5 million customers had been metered, representing about 55% of the 10.1 million active electricity customers in Nigeria. The government aims to deploy two million meters annually over the next five years to further bridge the metering gap.
