US Border Inspectors Charged with Bribery Scandal

Bribery Allegations Against US Border Inspectors

Two U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, Farlis Almonte and Ricardo Rodriguez, stationed at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in Southern California, have been charged with accepting bribes to allow undocumented individuals into the United States without proper documentation.

According to prosecutors, the officers allegedly communicated with human traffickers and received unexplained cash deposits. Surveillance footage reportedly showed vehicles passing through their inspection lanes with undocumented passengers. Each officer is accused of receiving thousands of dollars per smuggled vehicle.

This case adds to a series of recent incidents involving CBP officers and border inspectors accused of corruption:

  • Emanuel Isac Celedon: A former CBP officer from Laredo, Texas, sentenced to 117 months in prison for assisting a cartel in smuggling migrants and cocaine through the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge. Celedon provided his inspection lane details and allowed drug-laden vehicles to pass in exchange for bribes.
  • Manuel Perez Jr.: A CBP officer arrested for human smuggling and alleged involvement with the Mexican drug cartel La Linea. Perez reportedly assisted in smuggling undocumented migrants across the El Paso border, charging $2,500 per person, potentially earning up to $400,000 since December 2023.
  • Leonard Darnell George: A former U.S. border inspector sentenced to 23 years in prison for accepting bribes to permit drug-laden vehicles to enter the U.S. through the San Ysidro border crossing. George received $17,000 per vehicle, facilitating the entry of hundreds of pounds of methamphetamine.
