​A tragic incident occurred in the early hours of April 8, 2025, when the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, collapsed during a performance by renowned merengue singer Rubby Pérez. The collapse resulted in at least 44 fatalities and 160 injuries.

Among the deceased is Nelsy Milagros Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province and sister of former MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz. She had contacted President Luis Abinader shortly before her death, reporting that she was trapped under the rubble.

Former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel, a native of Santo Domingo and member of the 2011 World Series-winning St. Louis Cardinals, was also present during the collapse. Initial reports indicated he was rescued alive, but subsequent accounts suggest he may have succumbed to his injuries.

The cause of the collapse remains under investigation. President Abinader has been closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing ongoing rescue operations and expressing condolences to the victims’ families.
