Senator Nwebonyi Faces N5b Defamation Suit from Natasha

Natasha Files N5b Defamation Lawsuit Against Senator Nwebonyi

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has initiated a ₦5 billion defamation lawsuit against Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate. The suit, filed on April 7, 2025, at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stems from remarks made by Nwebonyi during a March 6, 2025, interview on Channels TV’s “Sunrise Daily” program.

In that interview, Nwebonyi allegedly referred to Akpoti-Uduaghan as a “gold digger,” “habitual liar,” and “habitual blackmailer,” and claimed she had “six children from different men.”

Akpoti-Uduaghan contends that these statements are false and malicious, causing significant harm to her reputation and subjecting her to public ridicule. She clarified that she has four children from two previous marriages and asserted that her current marriage to Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan was entered into lawfully and based on mutual respect.

In her legal filing, Akpoti-Uduaghan seeks several remedies:

  • A declaration that Nwebonyi’s statements are false and defamatory.
  • A perpetual injunction preventing Nwebonyi from making further defamatory remarks about her.
  • A public retraction of the statements and a formal apology, both to be published on the same platforms where the original remarks were made, as well as in two major national newspapers.
  • ₦5 billion in aggravated and exemplary damages.
  • ₦100 million to cover the costs of the lawsuit.
  • Post-judgment interest of 10% per annum until full payment is made.

This legal action underscores the escalating tensions and disputes within the Nigerian Senate, highlighting the broader implications of public statements made by lawmakers and their potential legal consequences.
