Ali Ndume: Tinubu’s Appointments Violate the Constitution
Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has publicly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent federal appointments, alleging that they violate Nigeria’s constitutional principle of federal character. He expressed concern that the appointments favor a particular ethnic group, undermining national unity and inclusivity. Ndume emphasized that Section 14(3) of the Nigerian Constitution mandates that political appointments reflect the country’s diverse demographics, a standard he believes is not being met.
In response, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, dismissed Ndume’s claims as hypocritical. Onanuga pointed out that two individuals from Ndume’s own senatorial district were appointed to top positions in NNPC Limited, including the Chairman, suggesting that Ndume’s criticisms overlook these facts. He reaffirmed that the President’s appointments are based on merit, geographical balance, and the capacity to serve Nigerians effectively.
Furthermore, Senator Sunday Karimi of Kogi-West advised Ndume to focus on pressing issues like national security rather than engaging in what he described as “playing to the gallery.” Karimi highlighted the severity of insecurity in the country and suggested that Ndume redirect his efforts toward addressing these challenges.
