Emergency Rule Forces NBA to Relocate Annual Conference
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced the relocation of its 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Enugu State. This decision stems from concerns over the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the subsequent appointment of a Sole Administrator, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas. The NBA views these developments as unconstitutional and detrimental to democratic processes.
Prior to the emergency declaration, there was significant enthusiasm among NBA members regarding the conference in Port Harcourt, with registration numbers reflecting this excitement. However, the political changes in Rivers State led to a reassessment. The NBA’s National Executive Council (NEC) convened on March 27, 2025, and concluded that proceeding with the conference in Port Harcourt would implicitly endorse actions perceived as undermining the rule of law.
Enugu City, known as the “Coal City,” has been selected as the new venue for the AGC. The NBA cites Enugu’s historical significance and its commitment to democratic governance as factors influencing this choice. The association assures members that preparations for a successful conference are underway in Enugu.
This move underscores the NBA’s dedication to upholding constitutional order and the rule of law, reflecting its commitment to democratic principles within Nigeria’s legal framework.
