Understanding Kebbi: Police Link Illegal Sirens to Election Violence Surge
The Kebbi State Police Command has attributed a recent surge in election-related violence to the illegal use of sirens by political actors and their supporters.
Speaking during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, the Commissioner of Police explained that unauthorized sirens have been used to intimidate voters, disrupt traffic, and trigger clashes among rival groups. He warned that such practices not only violate public order laws but also fuel tensions that could spiral into larger conflicts during the electoral season.
“Some politicians and their supporters deploy convoys with blaring sirens as a show of force. This intimidates the public and provokes confrontations with opponents. We will no longer tolerate this lawlessness,” the CP stated.
The police boss emphasized that officers have been directed to clamp down on vehicles illegally fitted with sirens, adding that arrests and prosecutions will follow any violation. He also appealed to political parties to rein in their supporters and prioritize peaceful conduct.
Civil society groups in Kebbi welcomed the move, noting that curbing illegal sirens is a crucial step in reducing political thuggery and safeguarding credible elections.
