The National Bureau of Statistics has revealed that the average cost of refilling a 5kg cooking gas cylinder increased from ₦4,962.87 in December 2023 to ₦7,177.27 in December 2024. This represents a sharp rise of 44.62 percent within one year, highlighting the growing financial burden on households that depend on liquefied petroleum gas for daily cooking.
State-by-state analysis showed significant variations in pricing. Taraba recorded the highest average at ₦8,074.41 for a 5kg refill, followed by Lagos at ₦7,910.71 and Benue at ₦7,900. On the other hand, Delta offered some of the lowest prices at ₦6,455, with Ondo and Zamfara also ranking among the cheapest states for gas refills.
The 12.5kg cylinders reflected an even steeper hike, with the average cost jumping by 50.08 percent year-on-year. Prices moved from ₦11,510.16 in December 2023 to ₦17,274.16 in December 2024. The figures reveal that the trend of rising cooking gas prices has been persistent, with earlier months such as July 2024 already showing double-digit increases compared to the previous year.
This continuous upward trend in gas prices underscores the wider challenges in Nigeria’s energy market, raising concerns over affordability for average households and the long-term sustainability of clean cooking fuel adoption across the country.
Cooking gas
The surge in cooking gas hasn’t gotten any better over time. I wonder what the government is doing about this.
