Akwa Ibom Doctors Face Sanctions After Pregnant Woman’s Tragic Death
The Akwa Ibom State Government has confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken against medical personnel linked to the death of a pregnant woman at a state-owned hospital. The case, which has sparked outrage among residents, is being reviewed by the Ministry of Health to determine the level of negligence involved.
According to reports, the woman died during childbirth after alleged delays in receiving urgent medical attention. Her family accused some doctors and hospital staff of neglect, claiming that their unprofessional conduct contributed to her tragic death.
The Commissioner for Health stated that a panel has been set up to investigate the incident. He assured the public that any doctor or health worker found guilty of professional misconduct would face sanctions in line with medical ethics and civil service regulations.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Akwa Ibom has expressed concern, calling for a fair and transparent investigation. The association emphasized that while doctors must be held accountable, due process should be followed to avoid unfair punishment.
Civil society groups have also urged the government to prioritize reforms in public healthcare facilities, stressing that poor service delivery continues to put the lives of vulnerable patients at risk.
