Legal Battle: Why the NBA is Taking IGP Egbetokun to Court Over Tinted Permits
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has filed a lawsuit against the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, challenging the Nigeria Police Force’s policy on tinted glass permits.
The legal action comes after repeated complaints from motorists who claim the enforcement of the tinted glass regulation has led to harassment, extortion, and abuse by police officers across the country. The NBA argues that the current system of issuing permits lacks transparency and violates the rights of citizens.
In its suit, the association is seeking a court declaration to stop the police from arresting or harassing vehicle owners with factory-fitted tinted glasses. The NBA insists that motorists should not be subjected to intimidation for simply using vehicles that meet standard manufacturing specifications.
The lawsuit also calls for the introduction of a more transparent and lawful process of regulation, stressing that the police must operate within the limits of the law.
This development has stirred public debate, with many Nigerians supporting the NBA’s stance, citing frequent police misconduct during roadside checks. Human rights groups have also urged the judiciary to ensure a fair ruling that protects citizens from unlawful harassment.
