Lagos supermarkets selling expired groceries
Consumers in Lagos have raised alarm over the sale of expired groceries by some supermarkets across the state. Recent investigations revealed that several outlets have stocked products with altered expiry dates, endangering public health.
Shoppers complained of falling ill after consuming food items purchased from popular retail chains. According to reports, some of these stores deliberately repackage expired goods while others fail to remove outdated items from their shelves.
Consumer protection advocates have urged the Lagos State Government and regulatory agencies, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), to immediately clamp down on offenders. They stressed that negligence in food safety not only violates consumer rights but also puts millions at risk of food poisoning.
Health experts have also advised residents to carefully check production and expiry dates before purchasing groceries. They emphasized that expired products may contain harmful bacteria and toxins capable of causing severe illness.
Authorities are expected to commence a fresh round of inspections on supermarkets to ensure strict compliance with food safety standards. Offenders, according to officials, risk heavy fines, closure of outlets, and possible prosecution.
