Edo deputy governor tasks lab scientists on vaccine production
The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has called on laboratory scientists to intensify research efforts and contribute to local vaccine production as part of Nigeria’s drive for stronger healthcare security.
Shaibu made the appeal while addressing medical laboratory professionals during a health summit in Benin City. He emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the dangers of relying solely on imported vaccines and medical supplies, stressing the urgent need for homegrown solutions.
According to him, laboratory scientists hold a crucial role in Nigeria’s quest for self-reliance in public health. He urged them to pursue groundbreaking research that could lead to the development of vaccines, diagnostic kits, and innovative treatment methods tailored to local health challenges.
The deputy governor also pledged Edo State’s support for initiatives aimed at strengthening laboratory infrastructure and fostering collaborations between government, universities, and private sector partners.
Stakeholders at the event welcomed the call, noting that enhanced investment in research and vaccine development would not only improve health outcomes but also reduce costs and dependency on foreign supplies.
