FG agric reforms 21 million jobs
The Federal Government has announced a sweeping package of agricultural reforms aimed at transforming the sector and creating 21 million jobs over the next decade.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security disclosed the plans at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, saying the reforms are designed to boost food production, reduce import dependence, and empower rural communities.
According to him, the initiative will focus on mechanization, access to credit, irrigation projects, fertilizer distribution, and investment in agro-processing hubs. The government also plans to strengthen partnerships with private investors and international development agencies to drive innovation and market access.
“The target is to make agriculture not just a subsistence activity, but a profitable enterprise that creates wealth and jobs for millions of Nigerians,” the minister said.
Analysts say the reforms, if fully implemented, could reduce food inflation, tackle rural poverty, and improve Nigeria’s non-oil revenue base. However, they warned that insecurity in farming regions and poor infrastructure remain major challenges.
The programme will be rolled out in phases, beginning with priority crops such as rice, maize, wheat, and cassava, before scaling to livestock and fisheries.
