PENGASSAN strike shuts NNPC NUPRC NMDPRA
Operations at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) have been shut down as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) begins a nationwide strike.
The union announced that the strike follows unresolved disputes over workers’ welfare, alleged anti-union practices by oil companies, and government’s failure to honor previous agreements.
PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo said the decision was a “last resort” after several negotiations broke down.
“Our members across all oil and gas installations have been directed to withdraw their services until our demands are met,” Osifo stated.
The shutdown is expected to significantly disrupt Nigeria’s oil production, fuel distribution, and regulatory oversight, potentially worsening fuel scarcity and impacting government revenues.
Industry experts warn that if the strike lingers, it could trigger a fresh wave of energy crises in Africa’s largest economy.
