Madagascar coup attempt Gen Z protests
Madagascar’s President, Andry Rajoelina, has condemned what he described as a “coup attempt” amid escalating protests led largely by Gen Z activists.
The demonstrations, driven by youth anger over unemployment, inflation, and governance issues, have spread across major cities, drawing thousands of participants. Protesters accused the government of corruption and economic mismanagement, while security forces responded with tear gas and arrests in attempts to disperse crowds.
Rajoelina claimed that some political actors were exploiting the protests to destabilize his administration and undermine democratic institutions. He vowed that his government would not be overthrown by “unconstitutional means,” urging citizens to remain calm and resist calls for violence.
Observers say the unrest reflects a growing generational divide, with younger citizens demanding reforms and greater accountability. International partners have called for dialogue to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
