Health authorities in Lagos State are investigating reports of an unusual wave of cough, fever, and respiratory symptoms spreading across several parts of the city, prompting concerns among residents and medical experts.
Hospitals and clinics in districts such as Ikeja, Surulere, and Lekki have reportedly recorded a surge in patients presenting flu-like symptoms that resemble seasonal infections but appear more severe and persistent.
Residents raise alarm
Many residents have taken to social media to express fear over the sudden rise in cases, with some describing the illness as “a strange flu” that lingers despite medication. Pharmacists also confirmed a spike in demand for cough syrups, antibiotics, and flu-related drugs in recent days.
“We’ve seen an unusual number of people with persistent coughs and fevers that are not responding quickly to normal treatment,” said a general practitioner at a private clinic in Lagos. “Most test negative for COVID-19 or malaria, which makes it more concerning.”
Government response
The Lagos State Ministry of Health said it has begun active surveillance and sample collection to determine the cause of the illness. In a statement, the ministry urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, assuring that the government is collaborating with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to identify any possible viral or bacterial source.
“Our epidemiology teams are on high alert. We are testing samples and monitoring reported cases across health facilities,” the statement read. “Residents should avoid self-medication and report to the nearest hospital if symptoms persist.”
