Police arrest 15-year-old serial robbery suspect in Gombe
The Gombe State Police Command has arrested a 15-year-old boy accused of being a serial robbery suspect responsible for multiple attacks on residents within Gombe metropolis and its outskirts.
The suspect, whose name was withheld due to his age, was paraded on Tuesday at the command headquarters alongside other suspects arrested for various crimes, including theft and assault.
Arrest and confession
Speaking while parading the suspects, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Mahid Mu’azu Abubakar, said the teenager was apprehended by operatives of the Anti-Robbery Squad after a tip-off from community members in the Tunfure area of Gombe.
“The suspect had been terrorizing residents for months, breaking into homes and shops at night to steal mobile phones, cash, and other valuables. He confessed to participating in at least six separate robbery operations,” Abubakar said.
Police recovered several items from the suspect, including three mobile phones, a locally made pistol, knives, and stolen wristwatches.
How he operated
According to the police, the teenager usually operated with two adult accomplices who are currently on the run. The group reportedly used motorcycles to monitor targets and carried out attacks between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.
“He acted as a lookout during some robberies and personally carried out house break-ins in others. Efforts are ongoing to arrest his gang members who fled the scene during the last operation,” the PPRO added.
Police warn against youth involvement in crime
ASP Abubakar described the case as “deeply concerning,” given the suspect’s age, and called on parents and guardians to be more vigilant in monitoring their children’s activities.
“It is unfortunate that a 15-year-old is involved in violent crimes. We urge parents to take moral and social responsibility for their wards and report suspicious behaviours early,” he said.
What’s next
The police spokesperson confirmed that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of investigations, in accordance with the Child Rights Act and relevant provisions of the Penal Code.
He also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring safety across the state:
“We will continue to strengthen community policing and intelligence gathering to rid Gombe of criminals, regardless of age or background,” Abubakar assured.
