Stray Bullet Kills Tricycle Rider Outside Lagos Brothel
Tragedy struck in Lagos State on Sunday night when a stray bullet allegedly fired during a clash between suspected cultists hit and killed a tricycle rider outside a brothel in the Oko-Oba area of Agege.
Eyewitnesses said the victim, identified only as Tunde, had parked his tricycle near the brothel to pick up passengers when a group of armed young men engaged in a heated argument that quickly turned violent. In the chaos, one of the men reportedly fired a shot that struck Tunde in the chest.
Residents said the shooter and his accomplices fled the scene immediately after the incident, leaving the victim in a pool of blood. Efforts by bystanders to rush him to a nearby hospital proved futile, as he was confirmed dead on arrival.
A commercial sex worker who witnessed the incident described the moment as “terrifying,” saying everyone around the brothel fled for safety as gunshots rang out.
“We just heard a loud argument outside, then a gunshot. Everyone ran inside and hid. When we came out, we saw the keke driver on the ground bleeding,” she said.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident, noting that a manhunt had been launched for the suspects. The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said investigators from the Oko-Oba Police Division were already on the trail of the gunmen.
“We recovered one spent cartridge from the scene. The body has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy, and we are intensifying efforts to apprehend the perpetrators,” Hundeyin stated.
The killing has sparked tension in the area, with residents urging security agencies to increase patrols around nightlife spots and brothels, which have become flashpoints for violence in recent months.
Authorities say the investigation will determine whether the incident was cult-related or a dispute among rival gangs.
