2026 World Cup: Gernot Rohr Says Nigeria’s Qualification for Playoffs Was Not Merited
Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has stirred controversy after claiming that Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs was not fully deserved, arguing that the team benefited more from luck than performance.
Rohr, who is now the head coach of the Benin Republic national team, made the remarks in an interview with a French sports outlet, where he analyzed the recently concluded World Cup qualifying group stage in Africa.
According to him, while Nigeria eventually secured a playoff spot, their overall display during the qualifiers was “inconsistent and uninspiring.”
“Nigeria have great players, yes, but qualification should be earned through consistent performance, not just moments of luck or favourable results from other teams,” Rohr said. “They struggled in key matches and only advanced because some results went their way.”
The former coach, who led Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2019 AFCON semi-finals, stressed that the Super Eagles’ current form was not reflective of their potential. He urged the team to focus on rebuilding confidence and tactical discipline ahead of the final qualification stage.
Rohr also praised smaller African teams for their growing competitiveness, noting that traditional powerhouses like Nigeria, Ghana, and Egypt can no longer rely solely on talent to qualify for major tournaments.
“African football has changed. Every team is hungry and organized. Nigeria must play as a unit, not just rely on individual brilliance,” he added.
His comments have since divided opinion among Nigerian football fans, with some agreeing that the Super Eagles’ performances under their current management have been below expectations, while others criticized Rohr for being bitter after his dismissal in 2021.
Nigeria is now set to face a tough playoff round to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
