Adopt Visionary, Servant Leadership, Wike Urges African Leaders
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on African leaders to embrace visionary and servant-style leadership to drive sustainable development, strengthen democratic institutions, and uplift the lives of citizens across the continent.
Wike made the call while speaking at the African Leadership and Governance Forum held in Abuja, where political leaders, diplomats, and development experts gathered to discuss strategies for tackling Africa’s leadership challenges.
The former Rivers State governor emphasized that Africa’s biggest problem is not the lack of resources but the lack of responsible leadership that prioritizes the common good over personal ambition.
“Leadership is not about power or privilege; it is about service and vision. Africa needs leaders who are ready to sacrifice comfort for the progress of their people,” Wike said.
He urged current and emerging leaders to adopt principles of accountability, transparency, and inclusivity, noting that genuine leadership must be rooted in empathy and commitment to nation-building.
Wike also challenged African governments to invest in education, infrastructure, and youth empowerment, which he described as the foundation for long-term stability and growth.
“If we must move Africa forward, leaders must think beyond election cycles and focus on building institutions that will outlive them,” he added.
Highlighting Nigeria’s leadership experience, Wike stressed the importance of collaboration among the executive, legislature, and citizens, noting that development thrives in societies where leaders listen and act on the people’s needs.
Participants at the forum commended the minister for his candid remarks, agreeing that transformational leadership is essential for addressing poverty, insecurity, and underdevelopment in Africa.
