Venezuela Pleads for Peace as US Military Action Escalates
The government of Venezuela has appealed for calm and diplomatic dialogue amid rising tensions following the escalation of US military operations near its borders, warning that any armed confrontation could have devastating regional consequences.
In a statement released by the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Nicolás Maduro’s administration called on the United States to halt what it described as “provocative and aggressive maneuvers” in the Caribbean and South American region. The government said the recent deployment of US naval and air assets represented an “unjustified show of force” that threatens peace and stability in Latin America.
“Venezuela reaffirms its commitment to peace, dialogue, and respect for international law. We reject all forms of military intimidation and urge the United States to pursue diplomacy, not destruction,” the statement read.
The plea comes as Washington reportedly intensified military surveillance and joint drills with regional allies, citing concerns over alleged illicit arms trafficking and security threats linked to the Venezuelan regime. Senior US defense officials have maintained that the actions are “precautionary measures” designed to ensure regional stability, not an attack on Venezuela.
However, political observers warn that the renewed military buildup could further strain relations between Washington and Caracas, already marred by years of sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and accusations of human rights abuses.
Regional leaders, including those of Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, have called for restraint on both sides, urging the US and Venezuela to return to the negotiating table under the mediation of the United Nations or the Organization of American States (OAS).
“Latin America cannot afford another armed conflict. Dialogue must prevail over confrontation,” said Gustavo Petro, President of Colombia, in a televised statement.
Meanwhile, Venezuelan citizens have expressed growing anxiety over the situation, with many fearing that an escalation could worsen the country’s already fragile economy and humanitarian crisis.
Analysts note that the standoff highlights deep geopolitical tensions between the US and Venezuela, with Russia and China continuing to back Maduro’s government economically and militarily, thereby complicating diplomatic efforts for de-escalation.
