Assailants Shoot Shawarma Vendor Dead in Lagos
A shawarma vendor was tragically shot dead by unidentified assailants in Lagos State, sending shockwaves through the local community and sparking renewed calls for improved security in urban neighborhoods.
The incident, which occurred late on Sunday night at a popular food spot along Ajah–Badore Road, involved two armed men who reportedly approached the victim under the guise of customers before opening fire at close range.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen arrived on a motorcycle, ordered food, and suddenly drew their weapons, shooting the vendor twice in the chest before fleeing the scene. Panic ensued as customers and passersby ran for safety.
“It happened so fast. They pretended to be normal customers, and before anyone knew what was happening, they shot him and sped off. Everyone was terrified,” said a witness who requested anonymity.
The victim, identified simply as Emeka, was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His colleagues and family members have been left in deep shock, describing him as a hardworking young man who recently started the food business after years of unemployment.
Following the attack, operatives of the Lagos State Police Command arrived at the scene and have since launched an investigation into the killing.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said detectives from the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, had been deployed to track down the perpetrators.
“Yes, we received a report of a shooting in Ajah. The case is under investigation. We assure the public that the suspects will be apprehended and brought to justice,” Hundeyin stated.
Residents in the area have appealed to the government and security agencies to increase night patrols and tighten surveillance, noting that similar attacks and robberies have been on the rise in recent weeks.
Community leaders also urged business owners to install CCTV cameras and security lighting around their premises to deter criminal activities.
The tragic killing adds to the growing concerns over rising urban insecurity in Lagos, where incidents of armed robbery, cult clashes, and targeted shootings have become increasingly frequent.
