WAEC Shifts Full CBT Exam Mode to 2027
The West African Examinations Council has adjusted its plan for a full transition to Computer-Based Testing, moving the timeline to 2027. The shift follows months of assessment and internal review, with WAEC officials explaining that several logistical and infrastructural gaps remain unresolved across member countries. These challenges include inadequate computer facilities in rural schools, unstable electricity supply, and slow progress in preparing examination centres for digital operations.
WAEC had previously targeted an earlier date for full CBT adoption, but education experts and lawmakers repeatedly raised concerns about readiness. Many schools are still unable to support large-scale digital examinations.
The council’s decision to move the implementation date to 2027 reflects a broader push to avoid system failures that could disrupt the exam process for millions of candidates.
Despite the shift, WAEC says it will continue expanding its partial CBT programmes, including mock tests and selected computer-based subjects. Officials maintain that full digital adoption remains a priority, but only when the infrastructure can guarantee smooth and credible examinations for all students. The new target year is intended to give governments, schools, and examination centres more time to close existing gaps and build reliable systems.
