Mikel Obi Explains How Premier League Regulation Blocked His Move to Manchester United
Former Nigerian international John Obi Mikel has revealed that a Premier League rule was the main reason Manchester United failed to sign him before he eventually moved to Chelsea.
Mikel, who was one of Africa’s most highly rated young players in the mid-2000s, had attracted strong interest from Manchester United after impressing at the 2005 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in the Netherlands. At the time, United believed they had reached an agreement to sign him from Norwegian club Lyn Oslo and even paraded him in a Manchester United shirt during a public appearance.
However, Mikel has now explained that the move collapsed because of Premier League regulations governing player ownership and transfer agreements. According to him, the club could not complete the deal due to issues surrounding third-party involvement in his contract and the league’s rules on how such transfers must be handled.
The midfielder said Manchester United were convinced the deal was done, but complications later emerged when it was discovered that another party also had contractual claims over him. This created a legal dispute that delayed the transfer and eventually forced the Premier League to intervene.
Mikel explained that Chelsea later stepped in and agreed to resolve the dispute by paying compensation to both Manchester United and Lyn Oslo. The matter was settled after months of negotiations, allowing him to finally complete his move to Stamford Bridge in 2006.
The former Chelsea star said the situation was confusing for him at the time because he believed he was going to Manchester United, only to later be informed that the move could not go through under Premier League rules. He added that he had little control over the legal and contractual issues surrounding the transfer.
Mikel went on to enjoy a highly successful career at Chelsea, where he won multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League. He also became a key figure for Nigeria’s national team, winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013.
His revelation has revived interest in one of the most controversial transfer sagas in Premier League history, highlighting how football regulations can dramatically change the course of a player’s career. Many fans believe the rule that blocked his Manchester United move ultimately shaped both his future and Chelsea’s midfield success for nearly a decade.
