NAF Returns Super Puma Helicopter to Service After Three Years
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reactivated its Super Puma helicopter after it had been grounded for three years, marking a significant boost to the service’s operational air power and readiness.
The reactivation was carried out after extensive maintenance and overhaul work aimed at restoring the aircraft to full operational status. Military sources said the process involved detailed inspections, replacement of critical components, and system upgrades to ensure the helicopter meets safety and performance standards.
The Super Puma helicopter is known for its versatility and is used for a wide range of missions, including troop transport, search and rescue operations, medical evacuation, and humanitarian support. Its return to service is expected to enhance the Air Force’s ability to respond quickly to security challenges and emergencies across the country.
NAF officials said the reactivation forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the Air Force’s fleet and improve mission capability through local maintenance and technical expertise. The project was reportedly completed by Nigerian engineers and technicians, reducing dependence on foreign maintenance support.
A senior Air Force officer described the achievement as a milestone, noting that bringing the aircraft back to service would improve air mobility for military operations and disaster response. He added that the Air Force remains committed to sustaining its aircraft through regular maintenance and continuous training of personnel.
The Super Puma had been out of service due to technical issues and the unavailability of spare parts, which led to its prolonged grounding. Its successful reactivation highlights the growing capacity of the Nigerian Air Force to manage complex aircraft maintenance challenges internally.
The development comes at a time when the military is intensifying operations against insurgents, bandits, and other criminal groups in different parts of the country. Analysts say the return of the Super Puma will provide additional support for both combat and non-combat missions.
NAF has continued to invest in fleet expansion and rehabilitation as part of its strategy to maintain air superiority and ensure the safety of Nigerian airspace. The reactivated helicopter is expected to be deployed for operational duties immediately after final certification and test flights.
