Lekki Tollgate Protests: Arrests and Outrage on EndSARS Anniversary
On October 20, 2024, police arrested several protesters at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos during a memorial rally marking the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests.
The protesters had gathered to commemorate the victims of the 2020 Lekki Tollgate shootings, where unarmed demonstrators were shot by security forces.
Police used teargas to disperse the crowd, arresting about 20 people, including prominent activists like Taiwo Soweto from the #EndBadGovernance movement.
These arrests sparked outrage, with some detainees alleging mistreatment by the police. However, all those arrested were later released following intervention by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.
