Jay-Z London Show: Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Idris Elba and Giggs Join Him Onstage
Jay-Z turned his long-awaited return to London into a spectacular celebration of hip-hop history, bringing Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Idris Elba, Giggs and DJ Khaled onto the stage during the first night of his JAY-Z30 shows.
The sold-out concert took place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday, September 4. It marked Jay-Z’s first solo headline performance in the United Kingdom in more than a decade.
Rather than simply perform his biggest songs, Jay-Z used the show to revisit different chapters of his career while celebrating three decades since the release of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt.
Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean Reunite
The biggest surprise of the evening came when Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean joined Jay-Z onstage.
The former Fugees members performed three of the group’s most famous songs: “Ready or Not,” “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “Fu-Gee-La.”
The appearance was a major moment for fans because Hill and Wyclef rarely share the stage together.
Their reunion also carried extra significance because The Score, the Fugees’ landmark second album, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
The crowd erupted as the pair performed their classic songs, turning the concert into a celebration of 1990s hip-hop as well as Jay-Z’s own legacy.
Idris Elba Opens the Show
Actor and DJ Idris Elba also played an important role in the concert.
Elba opened the performance with the spoken introduction associated with Jay-Z’s 2007 album American Gangster.
Jay-Z then moved into “Pray” before launching into a series of fan favorites, including “BAM,” “Beach Is Better” and “On to the Next One.”
Elba’s appearance connected the concert to another important period in Jay-Z’s career.
The rapper’s American Gangster album was inspired by the 2007 crime film of the same name, which starred Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe and featured Elba in the cast.
Giggs Represents London
British rap legend Giggs also received his own moment in the spotlight.
The South London artist joined Jay-Z to perform “Talkin’ the Hardest,” one of the defining songs of his career.
The appearance was particularly fitting for a London homecoming.
Jay-Z has previously shown his respect for Giggs, including giving the British rapper a major international platform through their collaboration on DJ Khaled’s “God Did.”
Seeing the two artists together at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium gave the London audience a special homegrown moment during an otherwise American-led celebration.
DJ Khaled Joins the Celebration
DJ Khaled was another surprise guest during the show.
He appeared onstage for “God Did,” adding another major name to an already impressive guest list.
The collaboration continued the long relationship between Jay-Z and Khaled, who have worked together on several high-profile records.
The appearance also mirrored the star-studded atmosphere of Jay-Z’s recent performances in New York.
By the end of the night, the audience had seen artists from hip-hop, British rap, film and R&B share the same stage.
Jay-Z Celebrates Beyoncé’s Birthday
The concert also became a birthday celebration for Beyoncé.
The singer was in attendance at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as she celebrated her 45th birthday.
Jay-Z paused his performance to acknowledge his wife and encouraged the enormous crowd to sing “Happy Birthday.”
Beyoncé appeared on the stadium’s large screens from her private suite, waving and blowing kisses to the audience.
Fireworks then erupted around the stadium, creating one of the most memorable moments of the night.
Despite the excitement from fans, Beyoncé did not perform during the concert.
Jay-Z Delivers a Career-Spanning Set
The special guests were only part of the show.
Jay-Z performed songs spanning his entire career, including material from Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, The Black Album, American Gangster and later projects.
He moved through major hits such as “99 Problems,” “Hard Knock Life,” “Run This Town,” “Empire State of Mind,” “Jigga What, Jigga Who” and “N****s in Paris.”
The performance was backed by a large live band and string section, giving many of the familiar songs a bigger and more cinematic sound.
The result was a show built around Jay-Z’s longevity rather than a new album release.
A Rare UK Headline Appearance
Jay-Z’s return to London carried additional importance because he has not regularly performed solo in the UK in recent years.
His last solo UK headline show was in 2013 during the Magna Carta World Tour.
That made the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium performances highly anticipated before the first guest even appeared.
The JAY-Z30 tour is designed to celebrate his 30-year career and the enormous catalog he has built since Reasonable Doubt.
Friday’s concert showed why that catalog remains powerful.
Even without a new album, Jay-Z was able to fill a stadium with songs from several generations of hip-hop.
Another London Show Awaits
Jay-Z’s London visit is not over.
The rapper is scheduled to perform a second show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, September 5.
After the first night featured such major surprises, fans will be watching closely to see whether another group of special guests appears.
The tour will then continue to Paris before heading to Los Angeles for its final dates.
For the first London night, however, Jay-Z delivered exactly what fans hoped for: classic songs, major surprise guests and a celebration of hip-hop history.
Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean reunited as the Fugees. Giggs represented London. Idris Elba revisited the American Gangster era. DJ Khaled joined the party.
And from the VIP section, Beyoncé watched her husband command one of London’s biggest stages on her birthday.
Three decades into his career, Jay-Z once again proved that his influence extends far beyond the records he has made.
