RAF Fairford Iran Link: UK Says There Are Strong Indications of Iranian Involvement
The UK government says there are “strong indications” that Iran played a part in the incident near RAF Fairford that led to the arrest of five men.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed the assessment on Wednesday, September 30, as counter-terrorism officers continued investigating the incident.
Burnham said British authorities were working closely with their American counterparts. However, he did not disclose the evidence behind the suspected Iranian connection, saying the investigation remained complex and serious.
UK Says Iran Played a Part
Speaking to the BBC, Burnham said the government could confirm its belief that Iran had played a part in what happened at RAF Fairford.
He stressed that he could not provide further details because the investigation was still underway.
The statement represents the clearest public indication yet from the British government that the incident may have involved a foreign state.
Burnham also said he had complete confidence in Britain’s security services and that officials were maintaining close contact with the United States.
Five Men Arrested Near RAF Fairford
Five British men in their 20s were arrested early Sunday after police received information about several suspicious vehicles near the airbase.
Three vans were examined as part of the investigation. Police subsequently confirmed that they found a quantity of petrol but no improvised explosive devices.
The men were initially arrested on suspicion of explosives offences before also being investigated on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism.
All five were later released on police bail under strict conditions. They remain under investigation.
Iranian Government Denies Involvement
Iran has rejected allegations that it was connected to the RAF Fairford incident.
Iranian officials have described suggestions of Iranian involvement as unfounded.
The latest British statement therefore remains an allegation or government assessment rather than an established finding by a completed investigation.
Authorities have not publicly explained what evidence led them to believe Iran was involved.
Possible Foreign State Connection Investigated
British counter-terrorism officials had already said they were examining whether the incident involved individuals acting for a foreign state.
That line of inquiry has now gained greater significance following Burnham’s comments about Iran.
One Suspect Called 999
The investigation also took an unusual turn after reports emerged that one of the five suspects called emergency services himself shortly before the arrests.
Investigators have reportedly been considering different explanations for the men’s presence near the airbase, but authorities have not confirmed a specific motive or plan.
Police have also defended the decision to release the suspects on bail, despite criticism from senior US officials.
Trump Administration Questions Bail Decision
US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have questioned the decision to release the five suspects.
He said British officials had been communicating with US counterparts throughout the investigation.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The latest UK assessment could therefore increase scrutiny of security around the base.
However, investigators have not publicly established the precise nature of any Iranian involvement, and Iran continues to deny the allegation.
For now, the RAF Fairford investigation remains active, with British and US authorities examining the evidence surrounding the five arrests, the vehicles, the petrol found inside them and any possible links to a foreign state.
