Christa Pike Critical Condition After Surviving Two Lethal Injections, Lawyer Says
Christa Pike is in critical condition after surviving two lethal injections during a failed execution in Tennessee, her lawyers said Thursday.
Pike, 50, was taken to a hospital after the execution attempt at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on Wednesday night. Her attorney, Randy Spivey, said she remains alive and is receiving life-saving medical care.
“We don’t have a sense of her prognosis,” Spivey told reporters. “But we do know that she is alive right now.”
Christa Pike Survives Two Lethal Injections
Pike was scheduled to be executed by lethal injection after years on Tennessee’s death row.
Correctional officials administered pentobarbital during the execution. According to court filings and witnesses, a second dose was also administered after the first failed to cause her death.
However, Pike remained alive.
Witnesses reported hearing her breathing and snoring after the second dose. The execution was eventually halted, and Pike was transported by ambulance to a hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Her lawyers said the circumstances raised serious questions about Tennessee’s execution procedure.
Lawyer Describes Difficult Execution Attempt
Spivey said the execution team spent about an hour attempting to establish an intravenous line.
He said he counted at least seven needle attempts in Pike’s left arm alone. According to the lawyer, one needle appeared bent when it was removed.
Pike’s attorneys had previously warned the state about concerns surrounding her medical condition and the difficulty of accessing her veins.
They argued that the problems encountered during the execution demonstrated the risks they had raised in court.
The Tennessee Department of Correction has defended its actions. The department said officials followed the state’s established execution protocol and that the lethal injection chemical had consistently been effective.
Governor Suspends Tennessee Executions
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee ordered a review of the failed execution and suspended executions in the state for the remainder of the year.
Lee described the incident as deeply troubling and said questions about what happened must be answered.
The suspension affects the state’s remaining scheduled execution later in 2026.
The review is expected to examine the execution process and determine why the lethal injection failed.
Why Was Christa Pike Sentenced to Death?
Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.
She was convicted of participating in Slemmer’s killing when Pike was a teenager. Pike and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, were convicted in connection with the case.
Her execution had faced several last-minute legal challenges.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed Tennessee to proceed after a federal appeals court had temporarily blocked the execution.
The Supreme Court’s decision cleared the way for the state to carry out the death sentence before the execution warrant expired.
Lawyers Seek Clemency
Following the failed execution, Pike’s lawyers renewed their request for Tennessee to commute her death sentence to life imprisonment.
They have described the execution attempt as a traumatic ordeal and argued that Pike should not face another execution attempt.
Her legal team said it would consider further legal options while Pike receives medical treatment.
For now, her prognosis remains uncertain.
The case has also renewed debate over lethal injection and the procedures used to carry out death sentences in the United States.
Tennessee officials have said the independent review will examine the failed execution. The state has not announced when Pike could face another execution attempt.
As of Thursday, her lawyers said their immediate priority was her medical treatment and recovery.
