Binance Hack: $6.3 Billion in Crypto Affected as Exchange Suspends Withdrawals
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has reported an estimated $6.3 billion impact from a suspected security breach. The incident has triggered emergency security measures, asset freezes and an investigation involving law enforcement and blockchain security experts.
In an update published on Friday, October 30, 2026, Binance said its initial investigation suggested that an attacker may have gained access through a compromised employee laptop.
The company said it was working with blockchain partners to trace the affected assets. It also confirmed that it would cover losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds.
Binance stressed that customer funds were safe. However, the investigation is continuing, and the full circumstances of the incident remain under review.
Binance Reports $6.3 Billion Impact
Binance’s latest security update placed the estimated total impact of the incident at approximately $6.3 billion.
The figure has attracted significant attention across the cryptocurrency industry because of the potential scale of the incident.
However, the reported amount should not automatically be interpreted as a final, confirmed loss. Investigators are still examining the transactions and determining the precise extent of the security breach.
Before Binance released its latest update, blockchain analysts had reported suspicious movements involving billions of dollars in digital assets linked to exchange wallets.
The reported transactions involved several cryptocurrencies and multiple blockchain networks. Analysts tracked the funds as investigators and cryptocurrency companies worked to identify suspicious addresses.
Binance has not yet published a complete technical report explaining every transaction or confirming the final amount of any loss.
The company said it would release a detailed post-incident report after the investigation is complete and the facts have been verified.
Compromised Employee Laptop Suspected
Binance’s preliminary investigation points to a possible compromise involving a DevOps engineer’s laptop.
According to the exchange, the attacker may have used the compromised device to gain access to a service container. This access may then have enabled unauthorised withdrawal transactions.
DevOps engineers help maintain the systems that allow digital services to operate. Their work can involve software deployment, infrastructure management and monitoring.
If an attacker gains access to an employee’s device or credentials, the consequences can be serious. However, the precise security weakness behind this incident has not yet been conclusively established.
Binance also said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys had been leaked.
Private keys are critical security credentials that can authorise cryptocurrency transactions. Protecting them is essential because blockchain transactions are generally difficult or impossible to reverse once confirmed.
The exchange said it had revoked the affected address authorisation and was working with law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners to investigate the incident.
Billions of Dollars in Assets Frozen
Binance said it had worked with blockchain partners to freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets.
Cryptocurrency companies can sometimes freeze certain digital tokens when they have the technical ability to block transactions involving specific addresses.
Tether, the company behind the USDT stablecoin, and Circle, which issues USDC, have also reported freezing assets linked to the suspected incident.
The recovery effort involves cooperation between Binance, cryptocurrency issuers, blockchain intelligence companies and law enforcement agencies.
The amount frozen may change as investigators identify additional addresses and trace the movement of the assets.
Binance Suspends Deposits and Withdrawals
As a precaution, Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while its security teams conducted checks.
The suspension may inconvenience customers who need to move cryptocurrency into or out of their accounts. Customers should rely on official Binance announcements for information about when services resume.
Binance also warned users to be cautious of scams and unofficial messages connected to the incident.
Cybercriminals sometimes exploit security scares by sending fake recovery offers, impersonating customer support staff or requesting passwords and verification codes.
Customers should never share passwords, private keys or recovery phrases with anyone claiming to help recover funds.
Binance Promises to Cover Losses
Binance said it would cover losses arising from the incident using its SAFU fund and company funds.
The SAFU fund was established to provide an additional financial protection mechanism for users in certain circumstances.
However, the company has yet to publish its complete technical findings or a final assessment of the incident’s financial impact.
For now, Binance says it is working to secure its systems, trace the funds and protect customers as the investigation continues.
