Binance Begins Recovering Crypto Funds After Record $6.3 Billion Hack
Binance has begun recovering cryptocurrency funds for affected users following a suspected $6.3 billion security breach described by blockchain analysts as the largest cryptocurrency theft on record.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange said it had allocated more than $6.34 billion in company resources to cover the losses. The company is also working with law enforcement agencies, blockchain intelligence firms and other cryptocurrency businesses to trace and recover the affected assets.
The incident occurred on Thursday, October 29, 2026. Investigators believe hackers moved approximately $6.36 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance wallets across 10 blockchain networks.
Binance has promised to cover confirmed losses. However, recovering the stolen cryptocurrency and restoring users’ account balances are separate processes. The company has begun addressing customer losses while efforts to recover the original assets continue.
Binance Begins Restoring Affected Funds
Binance said it had started recovering affected assets for users as part of its response to the security incident.
The exchange has committed company resources to ensure customers do not bear the confirmed losses resulting from the attack.
According to CoinDesk, Binance has already secured approximately $5 billion in the specific cryptocurrency assets affected by the incident. It is working to obtain the remaining amount so it can restore user balances on a matching basis.
The company also operates a Secure Asset Fund for Users, known as SAFU. This reserve was established to provide an additional layer of protection for customers in certain emergency situations.
Binance said it would use its own resources and the SAFU fund to cover the losses.
The exchange has not yet published its complete post-incident report. It is expected to provide further details after investigators finish examining how the attack happened and which systems were affected.
Billions in Cryptocurrency Have Been Frozen
Binance and its industry partners have made progress in restricting the movement of assets linked to the suspected hack.
The exchange previously reported that approximately $3 billion in affected assets had been located or frozen through cooperation with other companies.
Tether, the company behind the USDT stablecoin, froze nearly $1.57 billion in assets associated with the incident. Circle, which issues USDC, froze more than $800 million.
Other cryptocurrency businesses and blockchain partners have also taken action to restrict the movement of suspected stolen funds.
Some digital assets can be frozen by their issuers, while others cannot be blocked directly. Bitcoin and ether, for example, do not have a central issuer with the same ability to freeze individual holdings.
Investigators must therefore continue tracing transactions and work with exchanges, brokers and law enforcement agencies to recover assets that remain outside their control.
How Did the $6.3 Billion Hack Happen?
Binance initially suspected that a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer may have provided an entry point for the attackers.
The exchange later confirmed that its investigation had identified additional points of breach. It has not yet disclosed the complete technical details.
Blockchain analysis firms said the attackers moved most of the cryptocurrency within approximately 20 minutes.
TRM Labs and Chainalysis linked the attack with high confidence to TraderTraitor, a hacking operation associated with North Korea. Binance has not publicly confirmed the identity of those responsible.
The investigators believe the attackers gained access to systems involved in authorising cryptocurrency transactions.
Binance said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys had been leaked. It is continuing to investigate how the attackers were able to move the funds.
The company is cooperating with law enforcement agencies, including the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Secret Service, according to Reuters.
Withdrawals Remain a Major Concern
Following the incident, Binance suspended withdrawals while its security teams reviewed the affected systems and implemented protective measures.
Deposits remained open, but customers seeking to withdraw cryptocurrency faced disruption as the investigation continued.
Customers should rely on official Binance communications for the latest information about service availability.
The incident has also raised concerns across the wider cryptocurrency industry. Bitcoin and other major digital assets fell following news of the breach, while analysts warned that the attack could weaken confidence in centralised exchanges.
What Happens Next?
Binance’s immediate priorities are to protect customers, restore affected balances, strengthen its security systems and recover as much of the stolen cryptocurrency as possible.
The company has promised to cover confirmed losses, but the final recovery of the original assets remains uncertain.
The breach could also prompt exchanges to strengthen withdrawal approval systems, monitor suspicious transactions more closely and improve cooperation when attacks occur.
For Binance users, the company’s commitment to covering losses offers reassurance.
