Evo Morales Survives Assassination Plot: Impact on Bolivian Politics
Former Bolivian President Evo Morales recently claimed he survived an attempted assassination after unknown gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in Chapare, a region in central Bolivia where Morales has a strong base of support.
Morales reported that four masked men shot at his car as he traveled to a church event, with bullets striking his vehicle multiple times. Although he was uninjured, his driver sustained minor injuries.
Morales attributed this attack to political tensions with Bolivia’s current president, Luis Arce, accusing Arce’s administration of seeking to eliminate Morales as a political threat ahead of the 2025 elections.
Both men are associated with the same ruling party, the Movement for Socialism (MAS), but they have become rivals in recent years.
Morales has alleged ongoing persecution by Arce, who has publicly criticized Morales for allegedly destabilizing Bolivia through protests and road blockades.
