Why Plies is Taking Megan Thee Stallion and Other Stars to Court: A Breakdown of the Lawsuit.
Plies recently filed a copyright lawsuit against Megan Thee Stallion, GloRilla, Cardi B, and Soulja Boy, claiming that elements of his 2008 track “Me & My Goons” were used without permission in their songs.
He alleges that Soulja Boy’s “Pretty Boy Swag” and GloRilla’s “Wanna Be” remix with Megan and Cardi B share similar musical elements to his own track.
The suit also includes various music labels and production companies associated with these artists, such as Universal Music Group and Megan’s Hot Girl Productions, as defendants. Plies is seeking damages for what he views as uncredited use of his work.
Producers involved have weighed in, stating that the sampled chords actually trace back to Big E’s 2006 track “My Dougie,” which predates Plies’ song.
This adds complexity to the case, as the debate now includes whether Plies’ claim has sufficient originality or precedent. The artists and companies involved have not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
