Why IGP Banned Amotekun and Vigilante Corps in Ondo’s Election Process
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has announced a ban on Amotekun and other vigilante corps from participating in the upcoming Ondo State election.
The directive aims to ensure a more secure and impartial election environment by limiting the presence of non-federal security forces, who, while often involved in local security, may raise concerns about bias or misuse of authority during the election period.
The IGP assured that adequate police personnel will be deployed to maintain peace and order during the election, alongside federal security forces.
This decision has generated mixed reactions; some believe that excluding local security groups could limit incidents of intimidation, while others feel it could reduce overall security coverage in sensitive areas.
