Understanding the Surge: Irregular Migration Patterns into Nigeria
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has raised concerns over the increasing number of irregular migrants entering the country, calling attention to the dangers of undocumented movement.
According to officials, the surge in such migrants is linked to various illegal activities, including trafficking and smuggling.
The NIS is undertaking a campaign to raise awareness about these risks, with a focus on educating the public about safer and more regulated migration routes.
Recent efforts have already resulted in significant changes, such as a reduction in the number of irregular migrants from certain states like Edo, which used to top the list of states with high irregular migration rates.
The service also noted that many migrants are attempting dangerous journeys, particularly across the desert, in pursuit of opportunities abroad.
Unfortunately, these risky endeavors have led to the deaths of at least 1,200 people this year alone.
The NIS emphasizes that irregular migration often leads to human rights abuses, organ trafficking, and even loss of life, urging people to migrate safely and legally.
