Sextortion Scams: UK Teen’s Parents Call on Nigerian Scammers to Cease
The parents of a UK teenager who tragically took his life after falling victim to a sextortion scam have issued a heartfelt plea to Nigerian scammers to stop targeting vulnerable young people.
Their son, Murray Dowey, 16, was blackmailed after being manipulated into sending explicit images online, which the scammers threatened to share unless he paid.
Devastated and panicked, Murray ended his life within hours of the threats.
Murray’s parents have described the profound pain of losing their son and have called for stronger measures to combat sextortion crimes, particularly targeting the organized groups in Nigeria identified as being behind many of these scams.
They are also urging social media platforms to improve safety features and provide better education on handling such situations.
Meanwhile, Nigerian authorities claim to be intensifying efforts to address cybercrimes like sextortion, but the issue remains a global concern.
