Understanding the 18-Month Jail Term for Lagos Drug Trafficker
A South African woman, Duru Lindiwef, was sentenced to 18 months in prison by a Federal High Court in Lagos for drug trafficking.
The 37-year-old was arrested at Murtala Mohammed Airport while attempting to export 5.5 kilograms of methamphetamine to South Africa.
During the trial, she pleaded guilty, and her defense counsel highlighted her health challenges, including her HIV-positive status, to appeal for leniency.
The court considered these factors and tempered justice with mercy, ordering that her sentence be calculated from the date of her arrest in June last year. She will also be deported to South Africa upon completing her sentence.
