Ogun Conflict: Casualty Report as Customs Officers Battle Smugglers
A clash between Customs officers and suspected smugglers in Ogun State has left one person dead and at least seven others injured.
The confrontation occurred along the Sagamu Interchange/Abeokuta Expressway when Customs operatives intercepted vehicles suspected of carrying smuggled rice.
Armed individuals reportedly arrived to resist the seizure, leading to a violent exchange.
Among the injured are three Customs officers, a soldier, and three civilians. Witnesses claim that some of the injured were rice traders who had allegedly “booked” with Customs to allow their passage but were still stopped.
Protesters identifying as rice traders later stormed the Ogun State Governor’s office, demanding action to prevent such incidents and alleging that the Customs’ actions were excessive.
State officials assured the protesters that the medical expenses for the injured would be covered and promised an investigation into the events.
Authorities also warned against interference with anti-smuggling operations while reinforcing their commitment to enforcing trade laws
