AGF Fagbemi: End Political Bias in Rivers Emergency Laws

Rivers Emergency Rule: AGF Fagbemi Urges Non-Partisanship

Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has urged Nigerians to refrain from interpreting legal matters through a lens of political partisanship, particularly concerning the recent declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State.

Speaking at a public event in Lagos, Fagbemi emphasized the importance of adhering strictly to constitutional provisions when addressing legal issues. He stated:

“Nigerians should stop interpreting the law based on political partisanship, but let’s stick to the law. You’ll see that I’ve avoided taking sides on any issue, though I’m part of the government.”

Fagbemi highlighted that the matter is currently under judicial review and cautioned against making premature or emotionally charged comments. He added:

“Since we have subjected the matter to court interpretation, let’s wait for the judiciary to make its pronouncement.”

This comes in the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a six-month emergency rule in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, citing a prolonged political crisis. The declaration led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state assembly, with retired Navy Chief Ibok-Ete Ibas appointed as sole administrator.
