Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison for corruption and money laundering.
The charges stem from his acceptance of $35 million in bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for granting government contracts during his time in office from 2001 to 2006.
Toledo, who was extradited from the U.S. in April 2023, will serve his sentence in Lima’s Barbadillo Prison as part of a broader corruption scandal involving numerous Latin American officials.
